Toro Sentado

His true name was Yatanka Tatanka, military and spiritual chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux. His birth is placed between 1831 and 1834.

From a very young age he showed his courage, and he became the spiritual and military leader of the resistance. He was the victor over Custer at the legendary battle of Little Bighorn, in 1876.

He died on the 15th of December 1890, during the campaign of repression that ended in the massacre of Wounded Knee, where not a single living being was left: elders, children and women included.

Today the Sioux population is estimated at some 52,000, on reservations in Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska.

A woman named Fanny Kelly, who had been held captive in his tribe, described him thus: «He is a sincere and true friend. He is a devoted and incorruptible patriot. He is an affectionate and considerate husband and father. He is a person courteous and hospitable beyond measure».
